April and May are always a busy time of year for us. And this year
it's just a little bit busier. In two weeks, on May 30, we go to
court and adopt another one of our foster daughters. The following
day we are taking her to the local LDS temple to be sealed to us. For
those of you who are not LDS, that is a religious ceremony that we
believe makes it so that we will still be together as a family after
this life. The day after that, June 1, I'm giving her a baby blessing
in church. Again, for the non-LDS, a baby blessing is a blessing
given by priesthood holders, usually with the father acting as voice,
to a young child or infant. Also, the child is officially given a
name in the blessing, almost always the same one as on the birth
certificate. (Things get really interesting if it's a different name.
I always felt a bit sorry for Mahonri Moriancumr Cahoon and his
parents.)
Our future daughter turns one year old in just two
more days. She's a beautiful brown-skinned baby, and many people ask
if she is of Polynesian descent. In actuality, her pigmentation comes
from Africa through her birth father. She is half-sister to the two
girls we adopted a couple of years ago. She has been living with us
since she was about two months old.
For those who are interested: Yes, we do have another foster daughter.
She's been with us since last July, just after her third birthday.
We still don't know if she will be returning to a birth parent, going
to live with a different relative, or getting adopted by us. Stay
tuned, and you'll find out shortly after we do. Next court date is in
July.
